Finishing the Year with a Bang!

Oct 25, 2021 | Box Contents

You’ll have to excuse my somewhat questionable humour here, but my Newfie background and my Popa and Dad always taught me to handle even the tough stuff of life with humour.

One rough week!

This week on Tuesday, Jim was rear-ended at a stoplight in Markham on his first delivery route of the week and the driver fled the scene and later abandoned their vehicle! Jim was thankfully ok but rather shaken up and sore. This week has been a lot of conversations with police, insurance, the tow company (who held our van for 3 whole days while trying to bleed the insurance company dry) and re co-ordinating everything so you all still get your veggies, fruits and eggs.

I learned that rental vehicles take days, not hours (so thankful for my sister and brother in law who lent me their cargo van in a jiff so I could finish that first day’s route before everyone went to bed). I also learned you ALWAYS should call you own tow company and sometimes have to play hardball with these sharks calling themselves tow operators because they play games (shout out to you tow operators that are there to help and not capitalize on someone’s unfortunate situation).

I am so thankful for the team back at the farm who kept preparing your veggies and fruits while I drove and drove and realized that my driver has the routes down to a fine art and I do not! He’s back this week (happy dance).

Your deliveries may have been later than normal and the delivery person may not have been quite so smooth, but at the end of the day, everyone got their veggies (which your driver was so concerned about even after his accident). So thanks for bearing with us, and I hope that recipe for baked pears came in handy in case some of your pears got a little bruised in the accident too.

We know you are counting on us to keep good food on your table, and we will stop at just about nothing to make sure you are taken care of. A few thoughtful souls left thank you cards or a little gift to say thankyou this week, and it meant so, so much on this past crazy week! Our customers really are the best. Thank You!

Enough of the week’s drama…

It’s the last week of summer shares and I can believe it because brrr it felt so wet and cold today. I was hoping to harvest some sweet potatoes that got planted super late but I’m afraid we only have sweet potato fingers at this point. They are in the greenhouse, so fingers crossed-maybe they will grow a little yet in time for our first winter shares in 3 week’s time. If you haven’t signed up for winter shares and still want to, you can! Just follow this link or email info@zephyrorganics.com if you have any issues.

Chinese Cabbage, Turkey Bacon & Herb Noodle Bowl

Chinese Cabbage, Turkey Bacon and Herb Noodle Bowl

I can’t believe it’s been 2 years since I’ve shared this recipe! This needs to be re-shared because it’s definitely crave-worthy and very quick and simple.

Ingredients

1 chinese cabbage (1.5lb size)

3 tbsp sesame oil

2.5 tbsp rice vinegar

5 slices turkey bacon

250g chow mein noodles

2 tbsp. soya sauce

2-3tbsp. chopped green onion, garlic and/or onion chives (or try chopped leek tops)

Directions

  1. Heat sesame oil, rice vinegar, cabbage and turkey bacon over medium heat in a large wok.
  2. Meanwhile, boil chow mein noodles 1 minute or as per package directions.
  3. Once chinese cabbage is tender, add drained and cooked noodles, along with soya sauce and chopped fresh herbs. Stir fry a couple more minutes and stir until well combined.
  4. Enjoy! Use chopsticks if you are talented like that ?

New use for your planters when the plants are dead- lol, I know most of you are pet lover’s here.

Thank You!

For a great season. Your support make such a difference to our little farm family and the environment to boot! I hope it was a delicious adventure for you and connected you a little more to where your food comes from.

Fruitfully yours,

Jennifer, the Eng family and the Zephyr Organics Team!
