It’s like the fields are just figuring out it’s September.
The first sweet red peppers were harvested this week and we hope to have even more next week. The watermelon did not live up to our hopes in its new field, and sadly we lost most of it. We are sending a variety of yellow flesh and red flesh watermelons, cantaloupe and honeydew melons, and ground cherries, so there is bound to be something sweet in your farm shares this week.
Beans are still going strong- look at these fields! They won’t be quitting any time soon, and they are one of the easiest veggies to prepare! My favourite is simply steaming them until they are rich green and tender-crisp. If the colour dulls, you’ve cooked them too much. They are super nice raw as well! Dip them in hummus for a tasty, protein-rich snack!
Don’t forget, tomatoes can be your go-to on crazy busy weeknights. No cooking required! This meal came together in 20 minutes after work and dance class for my girl. No need to use boxed mac and cheese either. I just melt some butter, add milk, stir in a paste of water and flour, stirring vigorously, and then adding cheddar cheese, salt and pepper. This way you can control ingredients- use higher quality ones and avoid chemical preservatives and colour additives.
