Taste the Rainbow: Your Farm Shares June 21 to 25, 2022

It’s about to get garlicky!

]Those curly green things are the tops from garlic plants. Chop them up and use them wherever you would garlic! The whole top is great to eat. When they get popped off, it also helps the garlic bulbs grow. They add wonderful garlic flavour to pizza pasta and stir fries like this Stir-Fried Bok Choy or Sturdy Greens Recipe – NYT Cooking (nytimes.com).

Strawberries

It’s the half share and simply 6 shares’ turn to get a taste of our strawberries! These are an ever-bearing variety and we will enjoy them while they are good as we have a pest that can seriously mess up the shape and texture of the strawberries. Thankfully we have a new crop started in raised beds, so we hope these will be more resistant to those menaces!

Swiss Chard

This might be a new one for you, but it’s worth introducing to your diet. It’s just loaded with vitamins and can be enjoyed much like spinach. The simplest way to enjoy it is to steam it and add a little butter and salt, but my kids most appreciate it in pastas like lasagna.

Broken Ranger

Back in 2020 we purchased a side by side UTV that has been an amazing asset and sped us up on the farm. In a seriously unfortunate incident, diesel got put in my gas vehicle, and upon trying to remove the diesel the top of the fuel pump broke off. I learned that this was a $600 out of stock part! Thankfully my local dealer told me about a “plastic surgeon” who welded the broken spout back together. And…the Ranger is now back to work. The picture above is how we carry veggies over long distances when we are desperate. I must have gone a kilometre with this basket of radishes and greens! One of the farm team was stacking boxes up on a wheelbarrow to move them around. So glad we have wheels again!
