That Fall Feeling

Sep 13, 2021 | Box Contents

You’d almost think it were summer but for the cool mornings and the leaves beginning to turn. This is the time of year farmers watch the forecasted lows overnight, hoping to get any heads up of potential frost. I think after the super late spring frosts at the very end of May, we are due for a warm and frostless September. So far, the forecast looks good. We finally got some rain (major rain) after going through a rainless August. I was worried that the storm would cause damage to my flimsier chicken tractor. How ironic it was when it came through the storm just fine but succomed the next day to some regular fall winds. Don’t worry, all the hens were fine, and I happened to have a spare pen so they still have adequate shelter.

I hope your kids’ first weeks back to school were good. Our youngest son is a new JK student this year, and loving it so far. Shout out to all you teachers, meeting all your new kids for the first time, planning the heck out of your school years- then adapting your plans as you go along. You have such an impact on the kids- encouraging them and equipping them for learning, as well as promoting the joy of learning, so they keep giving each task their best. You pick out the kids who need a little extra nurturing, a kind word, even a good lunch and you give it. Teachers, we salute you this week! How those kindergarten teachers can keep 28 4 & 5 year olds focused, quiet, and in order is truly a marvel!

This week is salsa week in your boxes. Whether tomato or tomatillo, or both, salsa (with some tortilla chips) is a great snack rich in fibre and vitamin C. Fresh onions, cilantro, lime juice and garlic add plenty of flavour. Head back a couple weeks in our blog to see what tomatillos look like and find out how to make a Green Salsa.

Celery is here!

Some massive onions! This one is 1.5lbs all on its own.

Sweet peppers in the whole shares this week. Don’t worry, more is on the way.

Fresh Salsa- such a wholesome and refreshing treat!

Fresh Tomato Salsa Recipe

The salsa in a jar that you are probably used to is a cooked salsa. This is amazing too, but when tomatoes are fresh and flavourful, fresh tomato salsa delivers a lot of taste for more minimal effort. And just in case you made way to much salsa and are sick of chips, here are 30 serving ideas for salsa!
